How To Utilize Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Are Malas
Mala is the first Sanskrit term for prayer beads that are used to count mantra or recitations. Tibetan Buddhist communities throughout the world are awash with malas. These beads are put on wrists or hang from the fingers of people. They are called trengwa when they're Tibetan. As a fundamental part of Tibetan Buddhist practice is repeating (mentally or in loud voice) certain mantras thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of times, it's beneficial to use the Rosary to count off the number of prayers, as a sort of spiritual abacus. Even if you're not engaged in counting, the repeated recitation of the mantra as you go bead by beads through the mala can help to focus and calm your mind. The string is composed of 108 beads made of semi-precious or precious stones or seeds, wood bone, wood, or is the most popular kind. Each time you work your way around the mala, repeating an appropriate mantra for each bead you will be considered to having completed 100 mantra repeated. The additional 8 beads are designed to be "spare" in case you make mistakes or miscounts during the course. There is also a head bead, one that is larger than the rest and is commonly known as"guru bead. "guru bead." Many believe that this particular bead is of special significance because it is a symbol of the guru of one's choice, for instance however, in reality this is the starting point for the entire circuit, and is not counted among the total 108. Some malas might contain additional precious stones, such as turquoise or coral, added at different intervals. These stones may be added at intervals that you are able to count, like following 27 beads. This lets you know that you are just 1/4 of the circuit. Counter beads are added, so your total number of beads will be 111 and not 108. There's also smaller wrist-sized mala that is made up of 27 beads for example and is used when doing prostrations. The smaller size is wrapped around your hand and repeated four times. It is possible to make different configurations (e.g. 22 or 21). If you are able utilize your mala for counting, that is okay.

Types of Malas
There are a variety of malas that you can choose from, including bone and ivory as well as lazis liii, sandalwood or crystal. We don't believe that the type of mala you select is important for what kind or style of prayer. We think that Tibetans generally don't make large distinctions between the kinds and uses of malas. Monks and nuns will typically use very basic and cheap malas, like wooden ones. You can choose any kind of mala you like. It is more beneficial to concentrate on your spiritual practice of praying and reciting mantras instead of on the looks or value of the mala. See the recommended Antique Bodhi Seed Mala for examples.

How To Hold Your Malas And Count
As Tibetan tradition has proven, there are no rigid rules for calculating mantras and malas. Everyone is different. There are some common ways however they don't affect your intention or your attitude to prayer. If you're praying from your heart while using your mala, you are doing what is right! Although some sources recommend using the mala with your left hand however, certain Tibetans also hold them in the right hand. If you've got the prayer wheel in one hand and a mala in the other one, it is common to carry your mala in the left hand and the prayer wheel on the right. To use your mala start with the first bead next to the "guru" bead. Hold the mala between your thumb and index fingers. Repeat your mantra once at a time, either slowly or loudly. Next, move to the next bead , and recite your mantra once more. When you are at the guru's bead once more, you have completed 100 mantras and don't need to count them all. Most Tibetans are not going to abandon the beads of the guru at this moment. They simply move the mala in the opposite direction, and begin a new one, with 100 mantras. It's unclear why this happens. We do it because we're familiar with it.

Caring for your Mala
The mala you choose to use will gain spiritual significance as you use and bring it to teachings and maybe even get it blessed by your Guru. While it may not be as sacred as the Buddhist statue or piece of scripture but it is something that we generally treat with respect. It is not a good idea to throw it away, put it on the ground or put objects that aren't sacred to it. Tibetans are known to wear malas around their necks or wrap them around their wrists. They are not meant to be used as necklaces or to express self-deprecation but rather as a way to show spirituality. You can hang it high up in front of your altar, if you aren't using it for long or while you sleep. The bookcase we have under the altar is where we keep ours. It's up to your intentions and how you deal with it.
