How To Use Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Is Malas?
Mala is the original Sanskrit word for the prayer beads used for counting mantra recitations. All Tibetan Buddhist communities have many malas. They can be worn around wrists, or dangled from the fingers. In Tibetan we call them trengwa. You can use your rosary for counting the number of prayers. Even if you're not counting, the repeated mantra beads-by-bead in the mala helps to calm and keep the mind focused. A string with 108 beads is most common. These are made from precious and semi-precious stones, wood, seeds bone, wood, or any other substance. If you are able to perform 100 mantra recitations moving through the mala, repeating one mantra for each bead of it, you are considered accomplished. You have 8 extra beads to compensate for any miscounts and mistakes made along the way. A head bead may also be located, which is larger than all the others and is often known as "guru bead". It is used as the starting point in the circuit, and is not included among the total 108. Malas may contain additional precious stones at various intervals. These could include turquoise or coral. Sometimes, these stones are added at intervals where you can count, like following 27 beads. The counter beads add an additional count to your total beads count, which will be 111 instead 108. You can also use a smaller mala for prostrations, which is comprised of 27 beads. This is because the smaller size is wrapped around one's hand, and repeated four times. Different configurations are possible such as 22 or 21 and 22. However, this isn't a problem as long as your mala has the capacity to count.

Types of Malas
There are a variety of kinds and designs of malas. They vary from bone and ivory to sandalwood, lapis lazuli and crystal. There are numerous theories that explain which mala is appropriate for which kind of prayer. However, we dont think it is important which kind you select. We think that Tibetans generally do not make huge distinctions between the kinds and uses of malas. Monks and nuns tend to use basic and cheap malas, like wooden ones. You can use any kind of mala. It is best to be focused on the spiritual practice and the mantras you recite instead of focusing on how the mala looks or what it costs. Check out the top rated Bodhi Tree Seed Mala for examples.

How To Hold And Count With Your Malas
We want to state that, as Tibetan culture is well-known as, there aren't rigid rules for malas or the way of counting your mantras. Everyone is different. There are some common ways however they don't change your intent or attitude to prayer. You're doing what is right if you pray in your heart and make use of your mala. Some sources suggest you should hold the mala with your left hand, other sources recommend using it with your right. However there are many Tibetans prefer to hold the mala in their right hands. You may have an instrument for prayer in one hand and mala in the other. It is better to keep malas in the left hand, and the prayer tool in your right. Your mala can be used by starting with the bead nearest to the "guru". You can hold the bead between your index and thumb and repeat your mantra loudly or slowly. Then, you can move to the next one and repeat the mantra again. Once you are at the next guru bead , you are done with 100 mantras. Most Tibetans are not going to abandon the beads that are gurus at this stage. They simply move the mala in the opposite direction, and start a new circuit, with 100 mantras. This is something that we do as a matter of habit, and not for an exceptional reason.

Caring for your Mala
When you use your mala for mantra recitations or mantras, bring it to teachings, or get it blessed by your guru, it will gain spiritual significance. Although it's not as sacred as an actual Buddhist statue or a piece of scripture however, it's something is generally treated with respect. It should not be thrown around, placed on the ground or covered with everyday objects. Tibetans keep their malas around their wrists or around their necks when they are not in use. (Although it is important to note that they're not worn like a necklace, to show off, or with self pride, to demonstrate the spirituality of one's.) If you aren't using the pendant for a while, or you are asleep it is possible to hang it on a high, clean location close to your altar. The one we have is in a bookcase that is tucked away under our altar. It is up to you to take care of it, and keep an open mind.
